Zooming into the tenths

decimalsthousandthszoomplace value

Standards

  • CCSS-M · 5.NBT.A.3
Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths.

How it hits the standard

5.NBT.A.3 comparison to thousandths is hard to do on a 0 to 1 line because the numbers crowd together. Zooming the line to 0.3 to 0.4 gives the room to compare 0.355 against 0.35 and 0.37, which is exactly the fine comparison the standard wants.

Before you start

Point out that the whole line is one tenth wide. Children used to 0 to 1 need a moment to reset their sense of scale, and starting with only 0.3 showing makes that reset the first job.

Benchmark sequence

  1. Start: 0.3 at 8.3%
  2. Drop 1: 0.4 at 91.7%
  3. Drop 2: 0.35 at 50.0%

Cards & rationale

Questions to ask

  • This whole line is only one tenth wide. How many hundredths fit along it?
  • Where does 0.355 go, between which two hundredths?
  • Is 0.37 nearer to 0.35 or to 0.4?

Anticipated misconceptions

After the reveal

Ask what this line would look like zoomed out to 0 to 1, and where this whole window would shrink to.

Goal

When you zoom in on a single tenth, the hundredths spread out and you can see where a thousandth like 0.355 hides.
